QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF HYDROQUINONE CONTENT IN MARKETPLACE FACIAL WHITENING CREAMS

Hydroquinone is one of the dangerous ingredients in facial whitening cream cosmetics which can cause skin irritation, redness and a burning feeling. The purpose this study was to determine hydroquinone content sold marketplace. method used qualitative test using colour reagent Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) with toluene:glacial acetic acid as mobile phase (5:5) Silica Gel254 Plate stationary phase. Quantitative analysis UV Vis spectrophotometry at wavelength 541 nm. results TLC showed that 4 samples tested positive for A, B, D, E, range Rf values 0.44, 0.5, 0.52, respectively. quantitative 9 contained sample 0.22 3.62 ppm an LoD value 0.637 LoQ 2.124 ppm. indicate there are still containing hydroquinone, these not following Regulation Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (BPOM) No. KH. 00.01.43.2503 2009 where use ingredient prohibited creams because it endanger health.Keywords: Analysis, Hydroquinone, TLC, Whitening Cream
